Of those two, V&V is my favorite, based mostly on the sheer fun I've had coming up with random characters using the system. I kept using it to make characters for other games, or just for the heck of it, even when my group wasn't playing the game any more. Also, the simple speed of play and the amount of free-styling written into the rule book didn't hurt the game's chances to take the number 1 spot. Honestly, what drove me to seek out another game was not n unhappiness with the system of V&V, but the bad taste in my mouth connected to the stupid legal battle going on around the game right now. However, I will also say that I really liked rolling up Heroes Unlimited characters back when that first came out , too, but we never, ever tried to actually play that system nondisclosed_email@example.com (MaxTraver)Fri, 12 Oct 2012 02:31:44 +0000 Re: Other Faves?https://bzenithcomicspresents.runboard.com/p131,from=rss#post131https://bzenithcomicspresents.runboard.com/p131,from=rss#post131M&M 1st edition was the RPG that really got me into superhero gaming. I read it over and over again. I loved the artwork. I loved creating characters. I dreamed of the amazing things they would do in-play... And then... I played the game. Ugh.... Huge disappointment. It was too complicated and heroes were too easily rendered ineffective. BASH was next and I happily ran it for over a year. Great game and a great piece of genre emulation. After a year however, I found myself house ruling and streamlining more and more stuff. Which led me to SUPERS! And for Golden/Silver Age style superhero action, it's darn near perfect. My other favorite RPGs: James Bond 007 Savage Worlds Castles & Crusades nondisclosed_email@example.com (GWB83)Mon, 03 Sep 2012 00:36:14 +0000 Re: Other Faves?https://bzenithcomicspresents.runboard.com/p129,from=rss#post129https://bzenithcomicspresents.runboard.com/p129,from=rss#post129I played in a FASERIP campaign GM'd by Andrew, but in others too. I enjoyed them all. I was a big CHAMPIONS player up until HERO 4th edition. 5th and 6th are too crunchy for my tastes. I write for M&M, but outside of convention games I've never played it. I have great fondness for V&V. The Montreal Knights began there.nondisclosed_email@example.com (JABwriter)Sun, 02 Sep 2012 23:18:35 +0000 Re: Other Faves?https://bzenithcomicspresents.runboard.com/p113,from=rss#post113https://bzenithcomicspresents.runboard.com/p113,from=rss#post113Super heroics were never really my favourite type of rpg. Possibly because I always found they were far too complicated for the comics they were trying to emulate (Champions in particular). V&V was about the best, for me. More recently, I had an urge to run a super hero campaign with my group and bought a used copy of M&M. I tried generating a character and gave up so I bought BASH! and that came close but still didn't do it. I looked again at Champions, Silver Age Sentinels and a couple of others. V&V nearly won out, but I decided that didn't cut the mustard either. Then I remembered a system I wrote for an Iron Game Chef entry at The Forge I called "SuperCity". That was the basis of what went on to become SUPERS! I wrote SUPERS! for me and my group. it's just cool that others like it too. So, of course it's easily my favourite super heroic rpg.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Simon W)Sun, 02 Sep 2012 19:54:13 +0000 Re: Other Faves?https://bzenithcomicspresents.runboard.com/p112,from=rss#post112https://bzenithcomicspresents.runboard.com/p112,from=rss#post112Howdy folks! I've been playing superhero RPGs for a very long time, and enjoy aspects of most of them. SUPERS! has finally made the top of my list. It was tied with BASH for a very long time, but it finally won that struggle. BASH! UE retains that second tier. My third favorite, however, has to be Champions. It's wierd. I won't GM it anymore. I just don't need that level of crunch in my life anymore. That being said, it pioneered much of what makes a good superhero game, even to these days, and it's an emotional favorite for me because it was my first exposure to superhero gaming. Heck, I didn't even read comics before playing Champions, so it got me into my other favorite hobby and, when I think about it, even affected my professional life, as my graduate studies involved exploring the concept of the superhero in American culture. SO - Champions HAS to take third place. I'll put MEGS just under that. I was always fond of it, even though I didn't get to play it enough. Under MEGS are clustered FASERIP (mostly for the source material) and Superworld. Strangely enough, some of the longest running campaigns that I got to PLAY in were in Heroes Unlimited - a game that I don't really like very much. Many of my player characters (including Dragonfly) were originally designed for that system. What can I say!? I was desperate to play rather than GM and that's what my GM was willing to run! :-) We had fun, so I guess that's all that matters. I'm not only about superheroes, though. I've been known to run decent Fantasy campaigns, and I'll play just about anything. I've been gaming with the same guys since I was about 12 years old. We are currently running Castles and Crusades, Go Fer Yer Gun!, Call of Cthulhu, and Barbarians of the Aftermath. The list of stuff we've run in the past 30 years, though, is too long for me to list right now. Well, that's it for now. All the best! Here's there site: DGBG Of course, G-Core isn't the same as 4C; they are similar, but different enough. G-Core is pretty cool though, though the presentation is lacking (all that poser art doesn't work so well imho) For me, Champions was the primary supers game. I played/ran it all they way through 4th edition. When 5th came around, I kind of fell out of love with it. Some of my best supers campaigns was with that system though. I'm into V&V again, though our GM has a lot of house rules. Still, it's fun, and my group is made up of some great people. The adventures have all been interesting, and our GM has come up with some really interesting villains. I've played ran FASERIP, and I've run SAGA before. I like both, though I actually liked SAGA better. Had some fun running Aberrant, though the game didn't last very long. It's not a superhero game, but people can be superheroes if they want. I ran it as if it wasn't a superhero game, and let the players decide what they wanted to do. Worked out well while it lasted. I even played Superhero 2044 back in the day, but don't remember it all that well. I played Brave New World, and while it does have it's limitations, I didn't think it was as bad as others claim it to be. I own all the supplements for it too, and there was some good material in it. I own some other supers games (ICONS, M&M 3rd/2nd, Invulnerable, D6 Supers, D6 DC Heroes, Infinite Power, Heart & Souls, Resolute, Supers Unleashed, Kapow), but have no experience running them nondisclosed_email@example.com (urbwar)Sun, 02 Sep 2012 10:26:53 +0000 Re: Other Faves?https://bzenithcomicspresents.runboard.com/p66,from=rss#post66https://bzenithcomicspresents.runboard.com/p66,from=rss#post66Loved FASERIP. For me there were 2 that really mattered to me; Marvel Super Heroes Role Playing Game (FASERIP) and Marvel Super Heroes Adventure Game (SAGA). FASERIP rocked for me for one simple reason. I could eyeball a character in about 20 seconds. It was astoundingly easy to build characters and have fights that were dynamic and action packed. Yes it had its problems (pass/fail damage mechanic, a core intensity system that was great but not universally applied and punished those with high stats at doing mudane or easy things, etc...) but it played well and from about 1990 to 2010 it was the go-to supers game for me and mine! SAGA was a great game for one reason and one reason only for me, cards. Watching players look at their hands and have to think out their actions based on strategizing their numbers, well let's just say that it allowed one of my players who ALWAYS rolls crap to finally show his tactical mind in a big way! Had I the money I would make a retro-clone or even a NEW version of this game in a heart beat! So how about you? What are your old favs and why?nondisclosed_email@example.com (AndrewCollas)Sat, 01 Sep 2012 14:58:57 +0000
