DC writeups?

I have been having trouble any DC character writeups for Supers! Any peeps out there want to take a stab at statting up some DC characters?

I'd especially like to see Batman (the mastermind Grant Morrison version that always has the right gadget for the job and can take down anyone with prep time)

Shazam

Re: DC writeups?

Well, since no one else has tried to get things going in this thread yet I guess I will myself.

Here is my build for Shazam. Please note that in the new DC 52 they dropped the Captain Marvel name and he is just known only as Shazam now.

This is my first ever build for the game. Please feel free to critique it and tell me what you think or what you would adjust/add/remove, etc. Please also note I use different benchmarks than the ones provided in the core game, as I feel those benchmarks are woefully underpowered to be able to accurately do justice to DC and Marvel characters. My benchmarks for stat numbers are much more powerful.

I hope you enjoy it!

Shazam!

Daddystabz! Good to see you posting!

I've been itching to do DC write-ups for over a year, but various projects have kept me busy. It's good to see you trying your hand!

Some comments: All of his Powers are eligible for the Complication: Only in Hero ID. So, with the few additional Complications you've added, I'm coming up with a Power cost of 39D rather than 46D.

You can get away with the same for the Resistances, so they would come down to a total of 13D.

You then wouldn't need that Power of Shazam Disadvantage (as it would be attached to each individual Power or Resistance). Instant change would be the mechanism to transform.

Those are just suggestions. There is nothing wrong with the way you did it, actually. I guess I'm just sharing an alternate approach.

Indeed, some would take issue with my approach, claiming (perhaps rightfully so) that having the Powers "Only in Hero ID" isn't enough of a Disadvantage to be worth that much of a cost break. That's a fair call. I think it depends on what type of campaign he's gonna be running in.

Needless to say, this is an UBER powerful build - far more powerful than your starting SUPERS! characters. Still, that's the only way of modeling a character like Captain Marvel if you want to be true to what he can do in the comics.

Good show! Enjoyed the build, and looking forward to more! :-)

All the best,

Dragonfly

Thank you for the kind remarks and for your suggestions. I make throw up a version 2 soon to see how some of those suggestions might turn out. None of these builds will be on the power level of a starting character in the game by the rules provided in the core rulebook since I have to model obviously much more experienced and powerful characters from the DC and Marvel universes respectively.

Stay tuned for more builds as I get to them.

On my short list are: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Martian Manhunter.

Re: DC writeups?

I'm working on Batman right now and I'm sure he is going to be the toughest build yet to model him the way I want to. I'm going for the Grant Morrison mastermind can beat anyone with prep time type Batman.

Any suggestions in order to model all he will need to achieve this? I already gave him "I Brought This Along" but I feel he might need some Wizardry too in order to model his gadgets/utility belt well.

I'm also concerned about a few other things. The cap on Resistances is normally 3D for normal humans but I feel Batman should have Resistances well above this mark due to his intense training/honing of his body & mind. He will need them to contend with threats that the Justice League faces and to keep up with the likes of Superman & Wonder Woman. His Competency Pool will be something he will use a lot but the 1D limit that is usually in effect would hurt his ability to keep up with the big hitters sometimes so I'd be apt to allow him to use more than 1 die at a time a bit more than other powered heroes to make up for not having any inherent powers of his own. Also, his Fighting aptitude should be above 3D as he is one of the best fighters in the DCU.

What do you all think?

Howdy Daddystabz,

Honestly, I wouldn't give Batman any Resistance above 4D (tops). Once you start going beyond that, you are dipping into the truly superhuman range, and that's just not Batman anymore.

Keep in mind that Bats might be playing in a much higher point total campaign. If he comes in at 50D and he's running around with a bunch of heroes who are 60D, Bat's should have 10 Competency Dice to compensate. That can make a big difference. I think your idea of Wizardry (Complication: Items Must Fit on Utility Belt) is a good one.

Look forward to seeing what you come up with, and I'm enjoying your takes.

BTW, I find DC stats incredibly difficult to do. They [the characters] are so inconsistent when compared to Marvel characters, which remained relatively constant (perhaps until recently).

Whenever I sit down to do stats for Superman I have to ask - which one? There are three versions I'm always tempted to default to: Golden Age Superman, Pre-Crisis Earth 1 Superman, and just Post-Crisis Superman (the Byrne version).

The tougher question is which version of Wonder Woman to do. :-/

Anyway, I'm glad you're doing these.

All the best,

Dragonfly
