What about surprise checks to avoid being blindsided?

I agree with what you say about clues and games grinding to a halt though.

When I am in work, I recognize people I work with easily. When I am out of work I will often walk right past them. Not necessarily because I'm unobservant, but because they are not "in context".

So, no different to what I said in the previous post. A Streetwise guy is more likely to spot something out of place or "wrong" about a situation down a dark sidestreet than anyone else. Likewise, in a library, an Acadmic would be likely to see someone who doesn't really belong in a library, or spot that they aren't really interested in the books or whatever. This goes for virtually all situations.

Awesome, Simon! That is the best example I've seen of how to make aptitudes work for a specific situation. I love the idea of applying the most appropriate aptitude for an awareness or surprise situation. Thanks for the excellent examples!

I had some time to think about this last night when I went camping. I feel that observation checks should not be linked to Reaction. Just because you notice something, doesn't mean you have have time to react to it. I think the two should be kept separarte.

As far as creating a new skill, I do not want to suffer from skill glut. A character only has so many points to spend. If they have too many skills, those points will be spread too thin. Instead of creating a new skill, I would prefer to use the ones we currently have.

Things like spotting clues should be handled under investigation. Normal senses, like seeing things far away or detecting a specific odor will fall under the default 1d that everyone has for general stuff. If you have super senses you can use that instead.

While I don't agree with you on this 100%, I would accept it for active searches and such... but for passive getting "jumped" blindsides, I would have to go to Reactions.

Which is fine.

That said Simon, remember the 1st rule of these Revised threads is to feel free to spit ball ideas, there is a thread for actual clarifications and you can link a "see here" for those.

I just do not want to stifle any creativity here, but since yours was pretty much not part of the RAW, I'm willing to let it fly emoticon

Cheers!

Oh and it seems that we have hit the end of conversation on Aptitudes as well...

We have better clarification on how they work.

There was no need to bring in a "brand new" set of them.

The only thing left to discuss is Boost & Complications on them, which we can do in that thread.

So unless anyone strongly feels this conversation needs to keep going, I would say that we have reached the end of the Revised Aptitudes discussion.

Cheers!

P.S. Simon I am going to post your clarification in the other thread too.

On the advantages thread, it was proposed that the 3D cap on aptitudes be removed and allow them to be treated as powers. Normal humans still max out at 3D, but some superheroes can surpass that.

In order to keep them separate from skills, I still think that specialization is a good idea for any skill over 3D.

Aside from diferentiating skills from powers, is there any other reason for the skill cap?

I am envisioning a comic in which Thor is sparring with Captain America. Even though Thor is using his using his super strength or his hammer to hit Cap, Cap is able to avoid the attack using his martial arts. That would be a difficult feat if he were restricted to the best of three dice.

I did add a general awareness but there's a lot to be said for Simon's post about just defaulting an awareness type roll to an appropriate Aptitude depending upon circumstances.

For my own games I separated Academia into Academia covering bookworm liberal arts education such as anthrpology, psychology, history etc. and Science which covers all the hard sciences such as biology, physics, and chemistry.

I decided to split vehicles up into Pilot covering aircraft, Drive covering land vehicles and Watercraft which covered boats and whatnot.

I added a Business aptitude as well covering finance, credit ratings, accounting etc.

Do you think there should be an Aptitude for thrown weapons, such as knives, shuriken (throwing stars), grenades, baseballs... hmmm... maybe not baseballs. But you get the idea.

Fighting and Shooting don't seem to include thrown weapons per se.

Athleticism covers this range of actions pretty well.
