I am not saying that Secret IDs aren't the standard, just that they could be a disadvantage.

Sure, though they can't BOTH be a disad right? Then EVERYONE has one or the other emoticon

Why not both? Then there is the character who does not try to hide his identity, yet no one knows where he hangs his cape at night. (A man of mystery who has access to an interdimensional lair perhaps?)

Let me open this up then, what does everyone else think?

Should Secret and Public ID both be Disads?

I don't see the disadvantage to this. Ok, so everyone knows your name but you either don't have anything at stake (ie family and friends) or you're able to hide them (or yourself) away when you're off work.

Exactly, this third option is the version that is not a disadvantage, whereas a full Secret ID or Public ID would be.

If everyone knows who you are, it's harder to stay anonymous. If you're trying to do a stakeout out of costume, and someone recognizes you, the stakeout can be blown, and depending on how the villains/criminals react, it could put innocents in harms way.

Adoring fans may mob you for autographs, allowing someone to slip past you. Or worse, if they fear you, they may turn on you, again giving the bad guy a distraction.

If everyone knows who you are, by the very definition, you're no longer anonymous emoticon
