Centropolis & the 51st State

So... yeah... while researching superhero cities I came across this blog post;

http://siskoid.blogspot.ca/2011/03/dcu-cities-take-2-dcu-states-contest.html

Fun read.

Then I saw his follow through;

http://siskoid.blogspot.ca/2011/03/dcu-states-contest-drawing-map.html

This was much fun and certainly helpful is working on where to place Centropolis.

Then I found this...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superior_(proposed_U.S._state)

MY MIND IS BLOWN!

Wow.

So now I am going to develop the 51st State idea... BUT... It wouldn't be... it would be the 46th in 1897, right before Oklahoma in 1907. Which nicely makes Hawaii the 51st state in our revised history.

Too much fun. Now I have to make a map based on Marquette, the biggest city in the "new" state.

Why did this happen? Well what if the iron deposits found, lead to a BIG iron boom, not just the mini one that resulted in the are being developed.

Later we have pulp & paper and lumber as well from the vast forests (remember Jefferson wanted to call the new state Sylvannia).

The only question for me is what to call the State?

Superior is too arrogant, even with the Lake right there. But it works as a nickname, like how New York is the Empire State.

I thought maybe Jefferson, but given that would be my fallback.

Any ideas or suggestions on what to call this mythical state?

A lot of states were based off Native American Tribal names. You might look there for inspiration.

Then there is this...

Yeah I saw that, but I don't know if I would want to give it a native name. If I did in that area the primary natives were Chippewa, specifically the Ojibwa.

Neither of those really grab me.

I think something more "Manifest Destiny" would work here, hence the Jefferson bit... also I was thinking, since the Civil War breaks out a couple of short years later, in 1862 they could have bolstered their population by offering land to freed slaves and then again during the "Go West!" time in the later 1800's they had a whole "Go North!" expansion.

Hmmm... must learn more about this area.

But yeah, meanwhile state name.

So far, Chippiewa or Jefferson, but lukewarm on one and not hot at all the other.

Suggestions please?

Jefferson isnt bad really, but what if you just made up or looked up the name of one of the most influential people of the Iron Boom and go from there.

It would also give you story hooks about the progeny of said businessman and the family fortune

You could always cop out and not define the exact location, leaving it up to the individual gm to decide where to put the city.

Since I am an East Coast guy, I prefer my games set here. I would probably set my campaign in the New York/Boston area. Stealing blatantly what I can from yuor campaign info.

I am opposed to not deciding. I never liked when they did that with Gotham and Metropolis, so I won't do it with Centropolis emoticon

Chris, while your idea has merit, that works better for boroughs within the city I find.

I feel like something amazing is just on the edge of my mind, but I can't quite get it out.

Not that Jefferson is a bad name for a state, I think like Franklin it has been bandied about more than once.

What about Columbia?

The sad part is that historically the move was to call it Superior.

Bloody arrogant I know, but then again... Lake Superior and Superior, Wisconsin, a city near Duluth.

AND this is a Superhero world.

Just I can't help but think it is waaaay too arrogant and while that may be my Canadian coming through, I got to go with what sounds good to me, which is...

The State of Columbia

Aka, the the Superior State

Cheers and stay tuned for more.

Columbia is already overused, imho.

What is wrong with "The State of Ontonagon" aka "the Superior State".

(Although Mackinac would work as the name of a state too).

Columbia is as over used as Washington, but nothing is as American, than the word America emoticon

Also I earlier said I didn't want Native names, so the two you suggest, while from that area, just not what I want.

No, Columbia sounds just perfect to me. And not to be confused wit Colombia in Latin America.
