Re: Centropolis & the 51st State

Centropolis, Superior

I was told if you want to see if a name works, just go on your front step and shout it out loud a few times to see how it feels.

Alone, each one works, but sitting beside each other I am not so sure.

Re: Centropolis & the 51st State

Here's the history I am seeing develop.

During the Iron Boom (On par with the previous Cooper Boom) of the Ontonagon Territory vast veins of Silver were discovered in the Huron Mountains causing a major increase to the population flooding in.

Increase in the population came in the form of cheap labourers. Freed slaves from the south were promised a piece of land and a job in the mines, as well Cornish miners from England poured in as well. As the expansion of the West began, the cry of "Go West!" was matched by the call of "Come North!"

Soon the territory was flooded with hard working people from all over the East coast as well as French Canadians, Germans, Irish and vast amounts of Finish immigrants.

As the population and mineral wealth of the territory grew (The iron and cooper was already worth more than the California Gold Rush), the mining interests were determined to become the 46th state.

As Congress listened and weighed their proposals, two camps came into focus. One group that wanted to name the new state Superior (after the lake) and the other who wanted to name it Ontonagon after the territory. Heated debates raged in the newspapers and town halls of the area, with almost a full deadlock in place.

Meanwhile Congress warned that if the territory was not unified, they would be folded into either of the already existing states of Wisconsin or Michigan. this of course lead to Michigan interests supporting the Superior camp and Wisconsin interests supporting the Ontonagon one. There was rumour that Minnesota tried to get in on the action citing Thomas Jefferson's proposal of a state in the area called Sylvania, but no proof has ever surfaced save on Chicago newspaper editorial.

It seemed statehood was to die on the vine and Michigan would win the day, when a unifying voice came out of the mining community.

A Finish immigrant, named Jarkko Koivu, wrote an impassioned letter to the Mackinaw City Hearald in which he reminded all the "Yoppers" that they were building a new state with their hands in the earth and among the trees and even on the shores, in the lakes and rivers. They were living the promise of America, a promise started by Christopher Columbus when he set sail from Europe. He question why not name this state for the great man who found this new world, Columbus.

The story caught fire and within weeks had be reprinted in papers all over the region and even making its way back east to the New York Times (who in 1858 had supported the first efforts to make a state of the territory). It was lauded and caught fire in the hearts and minds of the American people and especially in the divided sides of the State name debate. Unification was achieved and in 1900 the 56th United States Congress granted statehood to Columbus.

Heady times indeed.

So yeah, I am pretty content with that. Next up developing the Capital at Marquette and the explosive growth of the port of Centropolis.

Cheers and thanks to everyone for their help and input on this one emoticon

Thanks for the encouragement Chris! Writers live for feedback and encouragement!

So now what I am doing is looking at the Panic of 1893 that caused loads of problems across the USA, and seeing how poor Columbus did in this, or maybe they found that elusive gold rush that everyone seems to think they should have there!

Plus I need to come up with the "Big Wig" money man fat cat who bankrolls and builds Centropolis.

Re: Centropolis & the 51st State

This was posted by Zenith Comics fan Michael Masella on the Facebook page last September and I forgot to post it here;

quote:

(Recently unearthed in the L'Anse, Baraga county archives by local historians)

"Why it's great to call it Morton - The Great Lakes State"

Dear Editor, Mackinaw City Herald,

I am writing in response to the letter to the Editor by Mr. Jarkko Koivu of March 12, 1858, entitled "Why Columbus is the Superior Name for a Superior State."

While I greatly admire the passion and belief in the American Dream evoked in his writings, I believe it falls short of the mark as to what we should name our beloved state, and why.

It is my view that while it is right to credit Columbus with having discovered the Americas in general; the relevance of it to us Yoppers is as removed from us as was where he landed in San Salvador so long ago. I say that the promise of America was truly born in our Act of Independence.

No one denies that it took much courage to cross the Atlantic and seek out what was "over there." But it is truly great men who are ones who stand up to build a new nation! One that is free of the ties to the kings and emperors of old. One that truly lives up to the promise that there really is opportunity here in the New World for every hard-working American, no matter their ancestry!

Those of us who have worked this land with our bare hands, have early ties that reach back all the way back through Pennsylvania to the Delaware river as early as 1640. It is there that we find roots in the heart of confederation. It was John Morton, descended from New Sweden's colonists of 1640 who gave the deciding vote in Pennsylvania to move forward on independence.

One of our very own Finns, John Morton, was there to vote in that nation-building act. Not only did he sign the Declaration of Independence, but Morton was also chairman for the committee that wrote the founding Articles of Confederation.

I might also point out that nicknaming this region "the Superior state" leaves a taste of hubris so thick, you can almost taste it. On the other hand, we have shores upon not one or two, but THREE Great Lakes. I think that acting "superior" is rude and arrogant. However, there is nothing wrong in working for and achieving greatness!

History will judge me if I am wrong, but I believe that bordering on so many separate, yet connected waterways will make for great importance in our future as a state! It is why I think our territory, more than any other, is The Great Lakes State.

If there was any man who would be representative of us Yoppers, I truly believe it should be one of our own: John Morton! It should not be someone who never set foot in any of our colonies. And thus, why I think it would be great to have it named the State of Morton - The Great Lakes State!

Sincerely,

Lars Suomi

(Sadly history did judge Mr. Suomi in error, and Michigan would later go on to claim the "Great Lake State" (singular) nickname among others. Further, while it was certainly well received among the sizeable population with Finnish ancestry, the Cornish, German, French Canadian and other ethnic differences led to marginalizing the proposal's chances for success.)

Love it!
