Agent Z and the Masters of Chaos

Had a chance to run a short game for my twin nephews yesterday. They didn't grasp the roleplayiing or investigatory aspects of the game very well, but they had fun so that's all that counts. When I asked them what types of powers their characters should have, I was told Spiderman and Wolverine. You want to play characters with their powers? Nope, they wanted to play Spiderman and Wolverine emoticon Ok, easy enough, put together two 20D versions of the heroes and moved on...

Very loosely based on an old Marvel game called Day of the Octopus or something like that.

The setup:
Agent Z, master of disguise and manipulation, has decided he wants to steal Iron Man's 1st generation arc reactor that is on display at the Houston Museum of Science. Being a master of intrigue, Agent Z has come up with a twisted web of lies to facilitate its theft:

1) He has posed as Kingpin and approached a local street gang, ordering them to shake down the vendors at the park across the street from the museum, starting on the day and time of the robbery (to act as a distraction and to reveal any supers in the area of course).

2) He posed as Buzzsaw, a leading member of the Masters of Chaos, and convinced four of their members (Crusher, Blow Torch, Monkeywrench, and Full Auto, all low-level villains)to steal the arc reactor.

And once these plans were in place...

3) Agent Z took the place of a security guard at the museum, just in case his unwitting henchmen failed to steal the device.

And that's how Agent Z operates, three different ways to accomplish a single, simple goal!

More to come later...

Re: Agent Z and the Masters of Chaos

They enjoyed the beating up bad guys part. The roleplaying was lost on them and they weren't interested in doing detective work to locate Agent Z. I'll keep working on them emoticon

So Spiderman and Wolverine started out patrolling the local park, having heard rumors that a local gang was planning on stirring up trouble. They spotted a number of Diablos Rojos gang bangers, dressed in their signature black leather jackets with a red pitchfork on the back, and started following them around. Shortly they came to an area where a hotdog vendor was surrounded by the punks. The Rojos Diablos were demanding "rental fees" for themselves and Kingpin while the poor vendor was trying to explain that he'd already paid off Kingpin for the month!

It wasn't long before knives, chains, and bats came out, and the two heroes jumped into the fray (and my Wolverine playing nephew started the round...and every round of the game thereafter...yelling "I pop claws!", followed by incoherent growling because "all Wolverine does is growls")

The initial gang of Mooks (3D6 or ~ 9 gangbangers) took a beating early on and were down to 1D6 at the end of the first round while the heroes were untouched. The second round reinforcements arrived, another 3D6 mooks. "Claw poppin'" Wolvie hit with both of his attacks, then Spiderman webbed and bashed the rest of them together, ending the scene quickly. They decided to leave the punks webbed to trees so the cops could clean up the mess.

That's when they heard the gunfire from across the street at the museum!

Of course during the fight, a man dressed as a guard from the museum, Agent Z of course, watched the fight unfold from the treeline. Once he was certain that Spiderman and Wolverine were the only two supers in the area, he raced back to the museum and called in the Masters of Chaos to start the robbery...

So Wolverine and Spiderman race across the park to the museum. They can see a man standing inside with a pair of assault rifles (Full Auto) randomly firing, seemingly for his own amusement. The occasional flash of flame can be seen inside as well.

At this point I mentioned that Spiderman could slingshot Wolverine into the museum, teaming up on Full Auto. Once my nephew learned by doing so Spidey wouldn't get his own action, he ignored the idea. So much for teamwork!

Wolverine dashed through the doors, catching Full Auto off guard. Pop claws, two attacks, two miserable defense rolls, and Full Auto is down to 1D in Comp, Fort, and Reac!

Spidey swung inside. After describing the remaining crew (a guy in a firefighter's getup with a flamethrower, a giant dude with a sledge hammer, and a guy with a satchel who just powered down the forcefield protecting the arc reactor display), Spidey aimed for the last figure (Monkeywrench) and rolling well, webbed him to the display!

Up next, Wolverine learns how dangerous a face full of lead can be, Spidey gets bounced, and a pair of noob gamers learn an important lesson, never trust a NPC!

Re: Agent Z and the Masters of Chaos

Wolverine, basking in the glow of dealing out 4D of damage to Full Auto, was caught flat-footed by the thunderous roar of the villain's machine guns (took a total of 3D damage between the three attacks, ouch!)

Spidey dodged Blowtorch's blast of fire (I decided not to use his Area Effect on Wolverine since he was pretty distraught about getting hit, and hard) but took a solid blow from Crusher's hammer, taking a bit of damage and getting smacked across the museum and back out the front door. (Doh!)

Wolverine popped out a few bits of lead as his regeneration kicked in, "popped claws" on Full Auto again, and sliced and diced his machine guns then threatened him with a feral growl. Full auto yielded to the hero! (Comp dropped to 0D).

Spiderman jumped back into the action, getting Crusher partially webbed. At this point a cowering security guard darted across the battle and grabbed the arc reactor from the display. He yelled to the heroes "Cover me, I'll get it to the vault!" then turned and ran down a hallway.

My nephews never suspected anything but a heroic security guard had joined their cause. They'll learn emoticon

The rest of the battle went swiftly, though by the end of it the museum was on fire and the arc reactor long gone!

This is where we concluded things. The boys were pretty upset that I "cheated" by having the guard double cross them and weren't interested in trying to stop the fire. Hopefully they'll give me a chance to set things right one day!

It does leave a couple of plot hooks lying about though:

1) Kingpin will most certainly be upset that someone's impersonating him. He may be able to help the heroes find Agent Z, but at what price?

2) Since four of the Masters of Chaos are now in jail, the rest of the crew is sure to come looking to bust them out and get some revenge too! If the heroes manage to nab Agent Z and the M. of Chaos figure out the double cross, they'll probably come for a piece of his hide, regardless of if he's in jail at the time.

3) Of course there's the issue of Agent Z and the stolen arc reactor. He obviously wants it for something. Sell it to an arms dealer? Turn it into a weapon himself? Something more villainous???

Well, we had fun, and hopefully someone can take this game and run with it!
